Argentina & Wine

Argentina & Wine

Argentina is the home of the sultry tango - and also a land of wide open spaces, towering mountains and volcanoes, rain forests, desert, glaciers, and much of legendary Patagonia. Wildlife ranges from penguins to toucans to monkeys. But it is the hospitality of her people that you'll remember most.
Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city known for its sophisticated residents - "porteños", its café culture, and the tango. You will find interesting architecture, shopping, handicrafts from the provinces, good theater and music - Teatro Colón is world renown - and excellent museums. It is easy to see why Buenos Aires is known as “The Paris of South America.” One of the world's most spectacular waterfalls, Iguazú Falls has more than 275 different waterfalls crashing over a 230 foot basalt cliff. In this protected sub-tropical rainforest you'll also see many species of butterflies, plants birds, and wildlife.

NOTE: Additional Covid testing may be required and is not included in the land cost.

Buenos Aires City Tour - Half Day/4 Hours

9:00am pick up.
Buenos Aires, cosmopolitan city that unveils its immigrant heritage at every step. The tour heads first to Plaza de Mayo, historical and political core of the city, to discover its main buildings and monuments: the Pirámide de Mayo, the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace), the colonial Cabildo and the Metropolitan Cathedral. We continue along Avenida de Mayo, interesting for its different architectural styles, to reach 9 de Julio Avenue, with its eight lanes embellished with lawns, fountains and sculptures, and of course the Obelisco, undisputable emblem and gravitational center of the city.
From here the tour travels back in time to San Telmo, the oldest districts in the city, where each Sunday an antiques’ market takes place, and which boasts an attracting night vibe with gourmet restaurants, lively bars and, of course, the “tanguerias” (restaurants with live tango). Moving on southwards, we reach the picturesque port district of La Boca, with its famous alley Caminito whose colored tin houses and customs reflect the influence of the 19th century European immigrants in the typical “cantinas” (small restaurants) and “conventillos” (tenement houses).
The visit continues to Puerto Madero, with its old port warehouses turned into offices, apartments, world-class restaurants and bars, with an amazing view of the docks and the Rio de la Plata.
Finally, we continue to the residential neighborhood of Palermo with its elegant mansions and ample parks, to end at La Recoleta, where there are remarkable sights such as the church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the Cultural Center and the circular building of the Palais de Glace. We will visit the cemetery, surprising for its rich architecture, for its suggestive stories and the relevant historic figures buried there, among whom Evita is probably the most renowned.
Return to hotel.

Day 3: Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires
Daily Summary
  • Tour: Dinner & Tango Show at Gala Tango
  • Accommodation: Alvear Art Hotel
  • Meals: B, D

Dinner & Tango Show at Gala Tango

Early evening departure from your hotel to San Telmo, the cradle of Tango. Tango music was born in the late 19th century in the " arrabales" (southern suburbs) of Buenos Aires, populated by "criollos" (Argentine natives), Italian and Spanish immigrants, some African descendants and people from many other countries. Their fights, their needs, their poverty, their passions, their pretense were the spark that created this mythical and passionate piece of Argentine culture. Its emotive lyrics are sometimes difficult to understand and almost impossible to translate but always deeply poetic. "Gala Tango" is one of the most exclusive tango venues in the city, due to its architecture and decor, in the French style of the 30s, with its Carrara marble bar and refined details. The a-la-carte gourmet 3-course dinner carefully designed by its exclusive chef should also be a distinctive highlight of the evening. Around midnight you return to your hotel.

Buenos Aires Historic Bars & Cafes - Half Day/4 Hours

This is the ideal tour to those willing to learn about the historic and cultural heritage of the city though its bars and cafes , which are such an important tradition for Argentinians. Along the tour, we will visit different districts of the city visiting some of the 73 cafes and bars declared by the city government as "Notable" because each one of them features some representative characteristics of the Porteños, their arts and their history.

We will start in Parque Lezama, where according to some historians the city of Buenos Aires was founded its first time by Don Pedro de Mendoza back in 1536. At the corner and Defensa St. and Brasil Ave, the Bar Británico frequented by the employees of the railway company and the Hipopótamo old outlet for liquors and spirits.
We walk along Defensa St. to reach Plaza Dorrego and the bar of the same name, a typical "cafetín" (small and basic coffee shop). From here, we will continue towards the San Telmo Market, where we will perceive the fusion of the old traditions and the actual life of the modern city that still nowadays keeps the tradition of coffee. A few meters on, and we will get to El Federal , one of the oldest bars of Buenos Aires. Back on our vehicle, we will pass by several other traditional bars such as Bar Sur , which only opens by night and is one of the pioneers in the Tango Show business, El Viejo Almacén, Bar Seddon and El Querandi.

Once in Avenida de Mayo, we will go by the London City and the Best known of all the old bars, the Café Tortoni . Moving along this avenue, core of the Spanish immigration in the city, we will have the chance to see some other bars and the one of the Castelar hotel, the Iberia Bar , and the 36 Billares . The tour continues along Callao Ave., passing by Bar Los Galgos. Afterwards we will walk to El Ateneo Grand Splendid , not one of the declared Notable Bars but an important asset to the city, this is a bookstore with a bar housed in the premises of an old cinema, which has been named by the British newspaper, the Guardian, as the second most important library in the word. We will then continue in our vehicle to Recoleta, to see La Biela, Mar Azul, and on to Corrientes Ave., the street that never sleeps. A walk along it will allow us to pass by El Gato , famous of its carried spiced cafes, La Giralda , and finally the Petit Colon , close to the well know opera house, which boasts a unique belle époque flavor.

We will enjoy a final treat before returning to your hotel. (Itinerary subject to change and drinks not included).
